Madhumita was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India and grew up in Indonesia. During her stay in Singapore she made several short films, one of which won the best of the world category in BBC and she was honoured with the Singapore Student Award.〔 In USA, she briefly worked with the ''Pirates of the Caribbean'' team before returning to Chennai to become a film director.〔
Her debut film was the romantic drama ''Vallamai Tharayo'' starring R. Parthipan and Chaya Singh.
